Here, we try to help answer some Frequently Asked Questions. If you do not see your answer here, please contact us: Who runs the Youth Basketball program? The Basketball program in Hamilton/Wenham is run by Hamilton Wenham Youth Basketball, Inc. (HWYBI) which consists of a voluntary Board of Directors and many volunteer parents and friends. Basketball is not a Hamilton/Wenham Joint Recreation Department program per se. However, much support and assistance is provided by that organization. (Thanks Maggie!) If you need to go the the Hamilton-Wenham Recreation web site - click here. There are no paid positions in the program. All board members and coaches are volunteers - any expenses are reimbursed from the dues collected including web site development and maintenance, scheduling, sub-contract coaching and organization labor, Liability Insurance, supplies such as First Aid, Basketballs, uniforms and other inventory items. In addition, normal operating expenses include Licensed Referees, Local HW schools for the gym rental, janitors and also any Recreation fees. Your volunteers work very hard toward making your child(ren) have a positive experience playing youth basketball. The web site is up 365 days a year and we can take your questions by e-mail at info@hwybb.org or you can submit the feedback form. Is HWYBI financially stable? HWYBI is fortunate, due to the many volunteers and friends that contribute their time and talent, plus with the fund raisers we do, to be financially stable enough to run a top-quality program year after year. The Organization is non-profit (Tax ID 22-3154616) When is the Basketball season in town and typically when does registration occur? Winter Basketball typically runs from late November through the end of February/beginning of March each Year. Travel teams play longer seasons than In-Town Recreation Teams. Registration for the Winter season usually occurs in late summer until October and families are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible so the programs can hit the ground running in November. Travel sign-ups also begin the summer and have a deadline. After 10/18, a $35 late charge is added to the Dues and for Travel teams, there is a wait list. Early registration is necessary for both Recreation Basketball and Travel Basketball so as to ensure we identify the number of gyms needed, recruit coaches, and roster players onto teams. In order of priority, every effort will be taken to ensure that the players are safe, have fun playing Basketball, and develop their Basketball skill sets. What is the difference between Recreation Basketball and Travel Basketball? Recreation Basketball is an in-town (Hamilton/Wenham primarily) activity that involves players in all grades from Kindergarten through the 8th Grade. Rec Teams are typically 10 -12 players with boys and girls segregated. Teams are divided by Grade Level(s) and skill level. Practice is one night per week (fixed prior to the season) for an hour except for the K, 1st and 2nd Graders, who only play one hour per week on Saturdays. Games then, are one hour at a fixed time on Saturdays at various gyms in town. 1st and 2nd Grade players have short scrimmages and no scores are kept. From 3rd Grade on, licensed referees are hired for Boys and Girls Recreation games. The last game of the season is usually a scramble type format where the teams play three different, but shorter duration, games or some type of fun playoff. For travel Basketball, HWYBI plays in the Cape Ann League and the Eastern Travel League, and is thus driven by outside forces. Girls Travel teams play in the River Valley League. Dealing with rostering, coaching, uniforms, practices, and game schedules for such a large group is a tremendous task for volunteers who have real jobs. Hence the registering of players needs to be done early to meet necessary deadlines. Travel programs begin in the 5th Grade for boys and 5th Grade for girls. Travel team players do not have to participate in the Recreation Basketball League but are encourages to do so. Travel teams are limited to up to 12 players per team. The games are played both "Home" and "Away" and have licensed referees and scores are kept. Travel teams can play/practice up to 4 times a week depending on the program. Whom do I contact for information regarding Basketball? If you can't find what your looking for on the website then please contact the appropriate board member or coach. Does HWYBI owns the Basketball Gyms? Hamilton Wenham Youth Basketball Inc. is fortunate to have the Rec Center gym and the local school gyms to use during the season. We do not own these facilities but rent them as needed and pay custodial fees. Without the generosity of the School Board allowing us to use the gyms for Youth Basketball, it would be difficult to have such a successful program. For directions to these gyms, click here. Are Uniforms Required? HWYBI requires that all participants, regardless of Rec or Travel, purchase a uniform. For Rec, a high quality, reversible jersey is required - This is sold for $25/30. This can be used year after year. We also sell shorts for $18. For Travel, a uniform is also required. Do coaches have to fill out CORI forms? Yes, HWYBI requires Travel and Rec head coaches to fill out CORI forms. In addition, we use patched referees for our Rec and Travel games. Our travel leagues belong to leagues that require patched officials. How can I help? HWYBI always needs your help! If you have a desire to assist us in this program, have a suggestion or want to volunteer time or skills to the program, please submit the form - thank you!!
